Cardinal Turkson 'bumps the celebrant' in DC

Turkson3       Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, was a featured speaker at a Catholic University conference on ethics and business for the week of September 21. The Cardinal opted to stay at our friary, 'Capuchin College,' during the conference, and was the main celebrant and homilist for the community Mass at the friary.

As the celebrants vested for Mass on Thursday morning, our brother Paul Dressler, OFM Cap. (to the right in the photo below), invited the Cardinal to preside. We are told that the Cardinal replied, “I don’t want to bump anyone.”  Paul told the Cardinal that he was scheduled for the Mass and would be happy 'to be bumped' by the Cardinal.

Cap College's Akolla Etuge, OFM Cap., a US citizen born in Cameroon, was acolyte for the Mass.

Born in Ghana to a Methodist mother and Catholic father in 1948, Cardinal Turkson was called to serve at the Vatican by Pope Benedict XVI in October 2009. He had served previously as Archbishop of Cape Coast and was elevated to the cardinalate by Pope John Paul II in 2003.  Leading up to the conclave of 2013 in which Pope Francis was elected Bishop of Rome, the media suggested that Turkson was a possible candidate going into the Sistine Chapel for voting.
